How to Install Standard Keyboard Layout

On Sharif Linux

Sharif Linux has Persian keyboard layout by default.

On Other Linux Distributions

To install standard Persian keyboard layout on Fedora, Red Hat, and Ubuntu:

  1. Open keyboard preferences dialog by choosing Desktop -> Preferences -> Keyboard Preferences
  2. Choose "Layouts" tab
  3. Click on "Add..." button
  4. Choose Persian keyboard layout in the dialog that appears

You can switch between the different Keyboard layouts by pressing the two Shift keys at the same time. You can modify this behavior in the "Layout Options" tab in keyboard preferences.

On Windows

The Persian keyboard layout that comes with Windows is not standard. Follow these steps to install a standard driver for Windows.

  1. Make sure that the Persian Keyboard in Windows is installed and enabled. If so, go to the next step. If not, do the following.
    1. In Control Panel, run Regional and Language Options
    2. In Languages tab, tick the box next to "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages"
    3. in Advanced tab, tick the box nest to "MAC - Arabic 10004"
    4. Press OK
    5. In Control Panel, run Regional and Language Options again
    6. In Languages tab, click on Details
    7. Click on "Add" and Choose "Farsi" for Input Language and Keyboard Layout
  2. Make a back up of the file WINNT\system32\kbdfa.dll
  3. Download the file kbdfa.dll
  4. Login as administrator user
  5. In Start, choose run and type in regedit
  6. In the left panel, open My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
  7. In the right panel, double click on SFCDisable and set the value to 1. Close the regedit window.
  8. Read this step thoroughly before doing it
    1. In Start, choose run and type in sfc /purgecache
    2. If a dialog opens and asks for Windows CD, close it
    3. Press "yes" on the next dialog, and close the Windows File Protection window or click on cancel immediately
  9. Restart the computer and login as administrator
  10. copy the kbdfa.dll file on \WINNT\system32\kbdfa.dll. The Windows File Protection dialog will appear again. Click on Cancel and click on Yes in the next dialog.
  11. Restart the computer

To check your installation

  • Got to Start | Programs | Accessories | Accessibility | On-Screen Keyboard
  • Change the keyboard layout. If the numbers are in Persian, you have successfully installed the standard layout.
